 Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can apply for a Health Research Experience Scholarship?

Health Research Experience Scholarships are only available to the 92 Investigators who are named on the NHMRC Targeted Call for Research application 2005944 (OCHRe).

2. How many Health Research Experience Scholarships can an Investigator be awarded?

Each Investigator will be eligible to apply for a Scholarship to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate or a postgraduate coursework degree students. Each Investigator may submit up to three applications per round. If the number of successful applications exceeds the available scholarships, preference will be given to the first successful application submitted by each Investigator.

3. How many Health Research Experience Scholarships are offered each round?

The inaugural Health Research Experience Scholarships will offer 12 Scholarships for the 2024 round. Thereafter, for the duration of the Grant, 26 Scholarships will be offered annually.

4. What is the Scholarship project selection process?

Successful applicants will be determined by a Scholarship peer review panel.

5. Who selects the student to work on the Investigator’s research project?

Student selection will be through a competitive process facilitated by the Investigator’s institution named in the Scholarship Activities Application.

6. Are Health Research Experience Scholarships open to all students?

Health Research Experience Scholarships are only available to Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander people who meet the student eligibility criteria.

7. Is the student eligible to participate if they are graduating at the end of the semester?

If the student is graduating in the same semester that the Health Research Experience Scholarship is due to commence, they won’t be eligible to participate. This ruling is made on the basis that the student’s enrolement status will cease upon graduation. This will result in their not fulfilling a condition of the student eligibility criteria.

8. Can the student participate if they are graduating but continuing onto further study?

If the student is due to graduate from their current program of study and will be commencing further study the following semester, they may be eligible to participate. This will depend on whether they can demonstrate enrolement in their new program of study prior to the Health Research Experience Scholarship commencing. The student may be asked to provide evidence of enrolement.

The decision to accept the application will reside with the OCHRe Investigator, acting as Supervisor (OCHRe Investigator).
