The Australian National University is home to the OCHRe’s UNITE Hub. UNITE is host to dedicated researchers who are committed to sharing their wisdom and experiences to build and elevate our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research workforce.
UNITE supports First Nations researchers with Teaching & Learning, Translational Research Fellowships, Immersion Programs, and Travel Bursaries.

Alex Brown
UNITE Lead
Professor Alex Brown (BMed, MPH, PhD, FRACP (hon.), FCSANZ, FAHMS) is the Professor of Indigenous Genomics at the Telethon Kids Institute and The Australian National University. He is an internationally leading Aboriginal clinician/researcher who has worked his entire career in Aboriginal health in the provision of public health services, infectious diseases and chronic disease care, health care policy and research.

Carmen Parter
UNITE Hub Coordinator
A/Prof Carmen Parter is A/Prof Carmen Parter is a Murri woman from Murrana, Juru and Darumbal clans of the Birra Gubba Nation with South Sea Islander heritage. After working in her local community as a registered nurse, midwife, and an Aboriginal woman’s health practitioner, she worked as a policy maker in governments for 25+-years. She is now a researcher, scholar, and theorist, located at the Djurali Centre, and is also working as Girudala’ CEO, a community-controlled organisation based in Bowen, Qld, on her mother’s Country.

Philip Obah
Project Manager
Phillip Obah, a proud Wadja, Walmajarri and Ngarti man, with a cultural education from the desert and a university background in sociology and economics.
He has been on the path of reviving traditional knowledge, lore and culture for over 20 years using a spiritual method of approach to community development, and a goal to developing a traditional knowledge and research centre on country and asserting the sovereign rights of his people.
His career path has been in cultural heritage, NDIS, job network agency and now research for public health policy at Djurali Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research and Education Group with a focus on making tangible impact in First Nations communities.

Samantha Hawkins
Aboriginal Projects Coordinator
Samantha Hawkins, a Badimaya Yamatji woman from Yalgoo, brings a wealth of experience to her role as the UNITE Aboriginal Projects Coordinator at The Kids Research Institute Australia. With a background in community development, project management, and Aboriginal suicide prevention, she has previously worked across the Pilbara region, focusing on advancing Aboriginal suicide prevention initiatives.
Samantha is committed to building the capacity of Aboriginal peoples and communities through her work.
